Greetings
- my name is Mark Abernethy, the author of Golden Serpent and Second Strike.
These are 'espionage thriller' novels that star an Australian spy, Alan McQueen,
who's an ASIS operative. I wrote these books - and there is a third one to
come - because for years I'd been enjoying Ian Fleming, Len Deighton, Alistair
MacLean, Robert Ludlum and John Le Carre, but their novels take place in Europe
and North America. Yet for me the most interesting part of the world was the
South-West Pacific: Australia and South-East Asia.
Before becoming a novelist in 2006 I was a journalist in New Zealand, Queensland and Sydney on newspapers such as the Australian Financial Review, and magazines such as The Bulletin and Australian Penthouse. I also became a ghost-writer of books for clients and a corporate speechwriter. Along the way I wrote screenplays that were not turned into movies and I also wrote for Home & Away.
On this website is an email contact for me that has been active since Golden Serpent first came out so I am now used to getting messages from people who want to know more about me. I grew up in New Zealand where I played a lot of rugby and tennis and was a mad skier. I went to university to do law but was never terribly committed. When I was half-way through an arts degree I discovered the joys of journalism and went off to pursue that. Soon after, while working on the Dominion newspaper in Wellington, I took off for Australia where I've been ever since. I am the father of one daughter and I live in Sydney.
Enjoy the site.
